NICU recliner chairs
Dr Kamanga and her colleagues are currently raising funds to purchase recliners for mothers at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (CHBAH)
At CHBAH, there is a 13 bed KMC (Kangaroo Mother Care) ward for moms with premature infants who are not critically ill. KMC improves bonding between mother and baby, keeps the baby warm and helps to increase milk production. For those babies that are too sick to be stepped down to continuous KMC and are still in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), moms can visit their babies throughout the day and there are facilities for them to store their belongings and snacks, but in the NICU they have only hard plastic chairs to sit on. There are many babies that
are still too ill to be stepped down to KMC but well enough to be held by their mothers – it is these infants the recliners would help; with more comfortable seating, mothers could hold their babies comfortably for longer periods of time and do intermittent KMC, which is good for both baby and mother.
