Rested Mothers Project
Like many other public hospitals Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital (RMMCH) lacks sleep over facilities for parents. This means that caregivers, usually the mothers, sit on seats next to their child’s hospital cot or crib for days and sometimes weeks on end. When these mothers go to sleep at night or take a midday nap they unfortunately have to either go home or as in many cases sleep on a blanket on the floor. The hospital has insufficient recliners where the seat unfolds into a sleeper couch. Several years ago the hospital received a donation a small number of steel-framed seats that could convert into a single bed. These have proven to have been successful in avoiding many mothers sleeping on the floor but they are not enough of these type of seats. This situation is not only most uncomfortable for the mothers but also affects the mental and physical health whilst she is dealing her sick child.

The Rested Mothers project aims to change all of this, by ensuring that all mothers in the four paediatric wards that require such seats that convert to beds will have access to them. We will do so my purchasing more seats and also re-upholstering the old ones that require this due to wear and tear.

Phase 1, chairs for the paediatric wards, was completed June 2023.
Phase 2, chairs for the obstetric wards where moms give birth, is now underway.

Update June 2023
The first phase of the Rested Mothers Project is complete!

With a massive thank you to all our generous donors, 49 new chairs have been purchased and are in the wards at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital.

We are moving on to Phase 2, chairs for the obstetric wards.
Update April 2023
We have almost completed the first phase of the project. 30 chairs have been purchased with funds donated, and we are incredibly grateful to each and every donor!

Thank you to our many generous donors - we have started refurbishing the existing chairs at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital!
